A cookbook to help those feeling distant from their Ethiopian culture re-connect
to their roots through the
joy of cooking.
The Amarhic term Gursha (goo-r-sha)describes the act of using your hands to feed someone a bite of food. This practice, done among family or close friends, underscores how in Ethiopia, food is a vehicle for connection and celebration.
Being first-generation American, I grew up living in a limbo between two cultures: my home Ethiopian culture and the American culture I assimilated to. Through living in this limbo eventually a distance grew between me and my Ethiopian roots. Wanting to close that distance, I decided to create a cookbook all about Ethiopian food and culture.
Through developing and cooking traditional recipes, exploring the spices and flavors of my food, and learning more about the cultural ceremonies I grew up with, I re-discovered that once lost connection.
